Alun-Alun Selatan is a historic public square located south of the Yogyakarta Palace (Keraton Yogyakarta). Surrounded by two large banyan trees, the square is a popular place for visitors to relax, enjoy traditional snacks, experience local culture, and try the famous Masangin tradition. In the evening, the area becomes more lively with colorful pedal cars, street food, and local entertainment.
History
Alun-Alun Selatan, also known as Alun-Alun Kidul, is part of the traditional spatial layout of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. Historically, the square served as an important area connected to the activities and traditions of the palace. Its two large banyan trees are considered symbolic elements of the palace environment and are closely associated with Javanese philosophy and cultural traditions.
