Unlike most Balinese communities, the people of Trunyan have preserved ancient Bali Aga traditions, including a unique way of honoring the dead. The bodies are placed in a bamboo enclosure called sema, beneath a sacred Taru Menyan tree.
Despite the presence of the bodies, the area is famously said not to have the strong smell of decay. The legend attributes this to the sacred tree, whose fragrance is believed to neutralize the odor.
