History & Description – Mount Batur
Mount Batur is an active volcano located in Kintamani, Bangli, Bali, surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Lake Batur and the highlands of Bali. Standing at approximately 1,717 meters above sea level, the mountain is famous for its sunrise trekking experience, offering spectacular views of the surrounding volcanic landscape, Lake Batur, and nearby Mount Agung.
Historically, Mount Batur has played an important role in Bali’s natural and cultural landscape. The volcano has experienced several major eruptions throughout history, with significant eruptions recorded in 1804, 1821, 1849, and 1904, among others. One of its most notable eruptions occurred in 1917, which affected nearby villages and contributed to changes in the surrounding landscape.
Today, Mount Batur is one of Bali’s most popular trekking destinations. Many travelers begin their hike in the early hours of the morning to reach the summit before sunrise. As the sun rises over the horizon, the changing colors of the sky illuminate Lake Batur and the surrounding mountains, creating a spectacular and unforgettable view. Beyond its natural beauty, Mount Batur is also considered a sacred mountain by the Balinese Hindu community, adding cultural and spiritual significance to the experience.
