Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu is a beautiful and peaceful water temple located in Sebatu Village, Tegallalang, Gianyar, Bali. Surrounded by lush greenery, natural springs, traditional Balinese architecture, and crystal-clear sacred pools, the temple offers a serene atmosphere away from the busier tourist areas. 🏛️ History
The history of Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu is closely associated with the spiritual journey of Rsi Markandeya, a Hindu sage who, according to local tradition, traveled from Taro toward Mount Agung with around 400 followers. During their journey, they stopped in the peaceful Pangkung Dawa valley to rest. Rsi Markandeya is believed to have performed prayers there to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu and asked for sacred water to refresh and heal his followers. (Dinas Pariwisata Kabupaten Gianyar)
During the worship, a natural spring is said to have emerged from the ground and was named Tirta Dawa Gunung Kawi. The name “Gunung Kawi” is traditionally associated with the carvings made by Rsi Markandeya, which were believed to symbolize mountains. Today, Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu remains an important place of worship for the local community.
