Tirta Empul Temple – History
Tirta Empul Temple was founded in 962 AD during the Warmadewa Dynasty, making it one of the oldest temples in Bali. The name "Tirta Empul" means "Holy Spring Water" in Balinese.
According to Balinese mythology, the temple is closely associated with the legend of Lord Indra and the evil king Mayadenawa. It is believed that Mayadenawa poisoned a water source to weaken Indra's soldiers. In response, Lord Indra pierced the earth with his spear, creating a sacred spring whose holy water revived and healed his warriors. This miraculous spring became the source of Tirta Empul's sacred water and remains an important place for purification rituals today.
For more than a thousand years, Tirta Empul has been a significant center of worship and spiritual cleansing for Balinese Hindus. Today, it stands as a symbol of Bali's rich cultural heritage, religious devotion, and timeless traditions, attracting thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year.
