Tulamben is a peaceful coastal village located on the northeastern coast of Bali, Indonesia, in Karangasem Regency. Renowned as one of the world's top diving destinations, Tulamben attracts divers and snorkelers with its crystal-clear waters, colorful coral reefs, and abundant marine life.
The village's most famous attraction is the USAT Liberty Shipwreck, which lies just a few meters from the shoreline, making it easily accessible for both beginners and experienced divers. Beneath the surface, visitors can encounter vibrant coral gardens, sea turtles, reef sharks, octopuses, and countless tropical fish. Even non-divers can enjoy snorkeling over the shallow parts of the wreck and nearby reefs.
Beyond its underwater beauty, Tulamben offers breathtaking views of Mount Agung, black volcanic beaches, and a tranquil atmosphere that makes it a perfect escape from Bali's busier tourist areas.
History
Tulamben's international reputation began with the story of the USAT Liberty, a United States Army cargo ship built during World War I. In January 1942, the ship was struck by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine while transporting supplies across the Lombok Strait. Although heavily damaged, the vessel was towed to the shores of Tulamben to prevent it from sinking in deep water.
For more than two decades, the wreck remained on the beach. In 1963, the powerful eruption of Mount Agung generated massive earthquakes and lava flows that pushed the ship into the sea. Today, the wreck rests at depths ranging from about 5 to 30 meters (16–100 feet), where it has transformed into a thriving artificial reef covered in colorful corals and home to hundreds of marine species.
Over the years, Tulamben has grown into one of Bali's most iconic diving destinations, welcoming underwater photographers, marine enthusiasts, and travelers from around the world.
