Broken Beach – Description & History
Broken Beach, locally known as Pasih Uug, is one of the most remarkable natural attractions on the southwestern coast of Nusa Penida, Bali. It is famous for its spectacular circular cove connected to the Indian Ocean through a massive natural limestone arch. Although called a "beach," there is no direct access to the shoreline. Instead, visitors can walk along the cliff edge to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the turquoise ocean, dramatic rock formations, and, if lucky, spot manta rays swimming in the clear waters below. The peaceful atmosphere and unique geological landscape make Broken Beach one of the island's most iconic destinations.
The name "Pasih Uug" comes from the Balinese language, where "Pasih" means beach and "Uug" means broken. According to local belief, the area was formed after part of the limestone cliff collapsed over many years due to natural erosion, creating the magnificent sea arch seen today. Local legends also tell stories of the site's spiritual significance, adding to its cultural charm. As tourism in Nusa Penida grew during the 2010s, Broken Beach gained worldwide attention through stunning photographs shared on social media. Today, it is one of the island's must-visit attractions and is commonly included in the West Nusa Penida Tour, together with Angel's Billabong and Kelingking Beach.
